Addressing SCADA Obsolescence on a Cable Manufacturing Line

When a SCADA system runs on outdated platforms, ensuring business continuity while planning a long-term upgrade becomes critical. That’s exactly what B2C Engineering achieved for an industrial cable manufacturer.

The client operated eight lines using FactoryLink 6.6 on Windows NT/XP — an environment posing serious risks to cybersecurity and reliability. B2C responded with a two-step strategy:

  • Phase 1 (urgent fix): Virtualize the existing system using VMware Pro on a new Windows 10 PC, keeping SINEC H1 communication with Siemens S5 PLCs.
  • Phase 2 (permanent upgrade): Rebuild the entire application in WinCC Advanced, modernizing the interface and tailoring the features with input from the client’s team.

This approach ensured immediate risk mitigation while enabling a smooth migration to a secure, user-friendly, and future-ready solution.
